McMaster Children and Youth University delivers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) based programming for children and youth in the form of FREE, on-campus Lectures by university professors and community outreach workshops facilitated by McMaster University students trained through our MCYU in the City program.

MCYU focuses on family learning, which allows for greater long-term retention of the material being delivered; creating conversational opportunities well beyond the classroom.

Youth are encouraged to:

Question the world around them

Discover their potential

Create amazing future opportunities

Our programs are targeted to youth 7-14 years old, but we do not restrict our attendance. We believe youth and their families should learn together and welcome all family members to all our programs.

aims to activate a dynamic community of educators, community partners as well as youth and their families to share in the discovery that comes through the understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). Our long-term goal is to encourage youth to become empowered and engaged citizens.

Our vision is to prepare our students to become innovative and responsible leaders of tomorrow. To support their growth, we inspire youth to question their world, discover their potential, and work together to create better futures.

(a) Provide original and relevant programming – a complement to grades 4-10 education –that empowers youth as confident and conscientious life-long learners.

(b) Collaborate with partners in our students’ education, including schools and community organizations.

(c) Connect youth with inspiring mentors, guides in multidisciplinary career exploration.

(d) Create interactive, inquisitive, and inclusive spaces where youth can explore their curiosities.

It is important to us that our programs are accessible to ALL children and youth. We are currently working to deepen our relationships with schools and organizations in neighbourhoods where high-school completion rates are disproportionately low. To help decrease barriers we bring our MCYU in the City Workshops directly into these neighbourthoods and provide transportation to our on-campus programs.

Engaging in inquiry-based learning is an important step toward fostering a more fertile relationship between participants and knowledge not yet within their grasp. This model is well suited to inspire the curiosity and self-confidence that is essential to long-term educational engagement.
