List of Workshops at Curiosity Crawl 2020

At MCYU it is important to us that our programs remain accessible to ALL. Our Family Lectures and MCYU in the City Workshops will continue to be free.

We have decided to start charging a minimal fee of $5 per child & youth for admission to Curiosity Crawl (this $5 includes a free snack and MCYU bag). This $5 charge per child & youth will offset some of the costs of the event and also ensure that those who register will attend.

If you are able and feel inclined to support our free programs (MCYU Family Lectures, MCYU in the City Workshops) beyond the $5 we are asking per child for the attendance at Curiosity Crawl, you can make a donation by clicking here. Remember, your generous donations helps to keep the majority of our programming free and accessible to ALL across the Greater Hamilton Area.

Here’s Some Helpful Information You’ll Need For The Day Of The Event

PARKING: If you are driving, please park in PARKING LOT I. We will be able to provide you with a parking voucher which will discount your parking.

SNACK INCLUDED – We will be providing a granola bar, juice box and piece of fruit for a snack for each child. If you anticipate your child needing more food throughout the day, please pack accordingly.

BRING A WATER BOTTLE. Help us cut back on creating waste from water bottles and bring a reusable water bottle for the day.

REGISTRATION/CHECK IN (Burke Science Building): Check In starts at 12:15pm. Upon checking in, you will be given a map and bracelets for the workshops you have signed up for.

PARENT WAITING ROOM: Parents who do not want to sit in on the workshops are welcome to hang out in the designated waiting room in the Burke Science Building. We ask that you meet your child at the end of the workshop to help them get to their next destination. There will be volunteers around to help guide people but we will not be providing one on one supervision.

PARENTAL SUPERVISION: Parents are required to stay on site with their children. MCYU staff and volunteers are trained to assist children & youth but cannot assume responsibility for the safety and well-being of children left unattended in the building. MCYU policies and services are designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for customers of all ages but parents need to use the same caution with their children on McMaster’s campus as they would in any other public setting. Responsibility for the welfare and the behaviour of children at MCYU’s Curiosity Crawl ultimately rests with the parent/legal guardian or an assigned caregiver. MCYU recognizes the following terms as stipulated in the Ontario Child and Family Services Act (CFSA) with regard to the supervision of children:

Lecture - Factories, Air Pollution, and the Effect on Animals

** COVID-19 Update: You may have heard that McMaster University has cancelled all classes for the rest of the academic term and has urged the cancellation of non-essential events. In keeping with this policy, MCYU will be cancelling its on-campus lectures for April and May. We are in the process of adapting the March, April and May lectures for online. To support families with their at home learning we are developing virtual challenges and activities that children and youth can do at home. We’ve also put together a list of online resources for parents. You can find this info in our Kid Zone here.

    Lecture Description:

Factories, Air Pollution, and the Effect on Animals – Factories can make a lot of poullution which gets shared with EVERYONE, including animals. Do you ever wonder what the costs are to use and our animal friends? From changing our DNA to changing our climate, discover how air pollution impacts us all!

Let’s Talk Science will conduct a hands-on activity immediately following our lecture, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.

    Ages: 7-14 (whole family welcome)

    Cost: FREE
