The McMaster Children & Youth University (MCYU) was founded in 2011 by Dr. Sandeep Raha and Dr. Katrin Scheinemann from the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University.
MCYU was originally modeled after the well established European Union’s Children’s University which was started at the University of Tubignen in Germany. This model has spread all across the world and MCYU is part of the global community. Over the last 5 years our model has evolved a direction of its own, which is quite different from the original programming developed in Germany. MCYU know focuses on family-based discovery programming, because we understand that ensuring strong positive educational experiences for youth really requires the efforts of a community, where the family is the central piece. Our on-campus and MCYU in the City always welcome the involvement of entire family in our discovery programming.
MCYU has also developed an extensive facilitator training program that aims to provide university students the opportunity gain practical experience in inquiry based teaching out in the community. Our students are mentored by experienced middle school teachers and experts in community engagement as they develop workshops focused on addressing community needs using their academic training. The development of these workshops are driven by multidisciplinary teams of student-facilitators and refined with aid of our experienced mentors. The teams are responsible developing their own workshop content and promotional material. This requires the development and implementation of project management and communication skills; experiences are critically important for post-university employment opportunities.
Bringing McMaster University’s world-renowned research and resources to young generations, we strive to spark the curiosity of children and youth; empowering them as engaged, educated citizens.
Our vision is to prepare our students to become innovative and responsible leaders of tomorrow. To support their growth, we inspire youth to question their world, discover their potential, and work together to create better futures.
More specifically, we:
- provide original and relevant programming – a complement to grades 4-12 education – that empowers youth as confident and conscientious life long learners
- collaborate with partners in our students’ education, including schools and community organizations
- connect youth with inspiring mentors, guides in multidisciplinary career exploration
- create interactive, inquisitive, and inclusive spaces where youth can explore their curiosities
